Backcountry snowboard camps

In association with our sister company White Room Chalets and with a great crew of friends and fellow instructors, I've been running Backcountry Snowboard and Splitboard camps in Sainte Foy and beyond since 2010. We run camps throughout the season, each offering top-quality chalet accommodation combined with 5 days of guided backcountry riding and coaching. Course-only options are available for some dates, allowing you to keep the cost down by picking your own accommodation.

Initial dates, prices and venues for winter 2019/2020 are listed below:

Riding powder in Sainte Foy on our March 2018 Backcountry Intro Camp

Pre-Season Backcountry Prep Weekend

7th December 2019

€225 course-only, accommodation option with Dragon Lodge TBC

A pre-season long weekender to sharpen your skills in the backcountry. Over 3 days of riding, we will look at avalanche safety skills, mountain safety and navigation, group tactics and riding technique. Weather and conditions permitting, the plan would be:

Day 1 :  Warm-up shred, basic avalanche rescue skills, group tactics

Day 2 : Riding technique clinic, advanced avalanche rescue skills, route-planning session

Day 3 : Splitboard tour, looking at safe travel tactics, navigation skills and snow-pack analysis

Backcountry Splitboard & Freeride Camp - Sainte Foy

11th January 2020

€495 course-only, €1095 with accommodation

A week (5 days, Mon-Fri) of guided backcountry splitboard touring and freeriding in and around Sainte Foy. We will take advantage of the weather and snow conditions as they come - big January snowstorms will mean shredding powder off the lifts in the Sainte Foy trees, clear weather will mean splitboard tours to the Fogliettaz, the Couloir DouDou or any number of other big lines. We'll mix big splitboard days with shorter, more lift-accessed days according to the snow and weather conditions and how much energy we have for climbing!

Sainte Foy is a legendary freeride paradise - a great snow record and superb lift-accessed terrain are combined with quiet slopes where the fresh snow lies untouched much longer than in the mega-resorts. Tignes, Val d'Isere and Les Arcs are also right on the doorstep, giving a huge choice of terrain around the valley.

Catered-chalet accommodation with White Room Chalets available.

Splitboard hire available for those who don't have their own gear.

Backcountry Snowboard Camp - Areches-Beaufort

1st February 2020

€1095

A week (5 days, Mon-Fri) of guided backcountry riding and coaching in our new venue of Areches-Beaufort. January is a great time to ride - quiet lifts, empty slopes and usually great snow. This week will include a couple of days splitboarding as well as some classic Backcountry riding, accessed via the lifts or short hikes (weather and conditions permitting).

Areches was my favourite riding destination before I moved to the Alps permanently. It has the same perfect combination of great terrain and minimal crowds as Sainte Foy, with the bonus of a bigger lift system and the legendary Beaufortain micro-climate. One of the first mountain ranges encountered by westerly storms, the weather systems slow as they hit the nearby bulk of Mont Blanc and dump huge amounts of snow in the Beaufortain - often twice as much as in the Tarentaise or the Portes du Soleil.

Half-board Hotel accommodation included.

Backcountry Intro Camp - Sainte Foy

29th February 2020

€1095

A week (5 days, Mon-Fri) of guided backcountry riding and coaching in Sainte Foy. Our BC Intro weeks are aimed at riders who are experienced snowboarders, but have little or no experience outside the marked runs. The week will include extra coaching on both snowboard technique and backcountry safety in order to help you comfortably make the transition from on-piste to off-piste rider.

The focus will still be very strongly on doing as much riding as possible, with coaching mixed-in as required depending on the weather, conditions and the level of the group.

Spring Splitboard Weekender

3 days of guided splitboarding over a long weekend. Spring touring is the best; big blue skies, long days and always great snow still to be found for those who go a little further.
